My main research topic is to elucidate the pathophysiological mechanisms of atrial fibrillation progression, prevalence and predictors associated with cardiovascular outcome.

My YTP project is about Bile acids, microbiome and AF.

Bile acids contribute to the control of cholesterol metabolism and may have a role in cardiovascular diseases. Lower levels of bile acids were seen in patients with coronary artery disease. This was associated with high LDL cholesterol and an increased mortality in patients with coronary artery disease. Microbiome has also been associated with cardiovascular disease. Data on bile acids, microbiome and AF are still lacking. We are analyzing bile acids and microbiome in different subgroups of AF patients and comparing this to comparable patients without AF.
